Dear editor:
At the recent special meeting deciding on the policing of the community our council walked away from saving the residents 3,000,000 dollars per year by electing to stay with the current force. A flagrant disregard for taxpayer’s money.
The only two councilors that opposed the status quo supported their reason with an excellent analysis of why they made their decision. The balance had no comments or the most fickle excuse was we would not know the names of the constables from the OPP.
The mayor in her political correct comments chastised councilor Dolan for her comments on the performance of the past police services board. May I remind you madam mayor if we forget the past you would not be the mayor of Innisfil.
The current services board is no better. They were aware the municipalities involved were considering a change yet they hired a new chief, bought a new dog, used taxpayer’s money to solicit support to keep the status quo. Consultants were hired to build a scorecard on soft police issues and even on the vote day allowed to present a third option. I question conflict of interest giving members of the council sitting on the police services board a vote.
The exit costs involved in hiring the OPP are being eaten up by retaining our own force. The excuse that we really don’t know the true cost of this procedure is hogwash in that we really don’t know if the chief can keep his commitment. Like many decisions made by this council we never know if we adhere to the budget or not.
I have no axe to grind with the S.S.P.S. In 73 years I have never become familiar with their names, I just know if I need support the constable that shows up is a trained individual no matter what badge they wear. But unlike our council I care what my tax bill is.
