The Banting Memorial High School Marauders senior girls flag football team are the 2025 Georgian Bay Secondary School Association champions after a win over the St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School Panthers during the final game held on the field at Banting on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The Marauders earned the right to compete at the regional championship after winning the Simcoe County Athletic Association championship on Oct. 30.

St. Peter’s arrived at the final game as the Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County championship team.

The final game was tied at seven going into the second half.

Banting took a lead on a pass into the end zone.

The Marauders put a lot of pressure on the Panthers in the second half, keeping much of the play in the St. Peter’s zone.

With five plays left in the game, the Marauders got some insurance with another touchdown on a throw to the end zone.

The final was a 26-7 win for Banting, and they were awarded the 2025 championship.

The game was a highly spirited match with a lot of talk on the field and some pretty aggressive plays.

“I think we’re such a strong team, nothing can stop us. They couldn’t get in our heads,” said Marauders team member Tessa Gibbings, of her team ignoring taunts by the opposition. “It was an amazing season. I think our quarterback (Celina Whittaker) is one of the best ones. She helped us succeed a lot. We actually didn’t even practice before this game.”

Tessa scored the first Banting touchdown of the game.

“Once they got the touchdown to tie the game, we knew it was a new game,” Tessa said. “We knew that we had to do very well in the second half – and we did. I think defence wins games, and I think our defence is one of the best.”

This was a historic win for the Banting team. The Marauders senior girls now have a 50-0 record in regular season and playoffs, and five championship wins over the past five years.

This is a real testament to the dedication to the sport at Banting and some excellent coaching at the school.
