The Alliston Junior C Hornets have the first notch in their sticks for the 2016/17 season after a 4-2 win over the Stayner Siskins during the Hornets home opener at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Sept. 16.
The Hornets had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period on goals from Ryan McReynolds and Ryan Young.
They opened it up in the second frame when Justin Wing scored at 7:18 into the period.
Stayner scored their first one at the 9:13 mark, then closed the gap with a power play goal early in the third period.
Alliston’s Devon Gillham scored his first of the season to make it a 4-2 game.
The Hornets held on to take the win in their first game of the season.
The Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League is down to eight teams this season as the Erin Shamrocks applied for, and received a year’s leave of absence for the season.
The Hornets are the defending GMOHL champions after winning last year in a final series with the Penetang Kings.
Head coach Darrin Shannon has returned to the top spot on the bench.
Also returning are assistant coaches Trevor Belrose, Scott Hutchinson, and Blair Molto. New addition on the bench is Travis Chapman – a former OHLer.
“We have a lot of local kids – a few that have come home,” said Hornets GM Rick Bartlett, referring to players that have been away at school, and are now back in town. “They wanted to come back home. This is their last year of hockey and they wanted to come back and play with their friends. A lot of recruitment was done by our own players.”
It’s way to early to see how the League is going to shape up, but there is already talk of some strong teams that have worked hard to pad their rosters for this season.
“Stayner loaded up pretty good. They’re going to have a really good team. I think Huntsville is going to be up there too,” Bartlett said of the new League line-up.
The Hornets will be back on home ice this Friday, Sept. 23, when they will host the Caledon Golden Hawks.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
