They ran, walked, and cycled the route along the old railway trail in Tottenham to take part in the annual Terry Fox Run.

It was a small group, but the important thing is, they turned out to participate.

Eleven local participants took part in the Run on Sunday, Sept. 14, starting at the trail on Mill Street across from the Steam Train.

Collectively, they raised $2,250 in support of cancer research.

“The Tottenham Terry Fox Run has been held for 37 years now, and I took over the organization to keep Terry’s Marathon of Hope alive in our town,” said Run organizer Phil Short. “It would be great to see more people participate so if anyone has any ideas on how to make the event bigger for next year or would like to assist in organizing it, please reach out to me at phil.short@yahoo.com.”

A statement from the national Terry Fox Run organization underscored the impact of community efforts across Canada: “We are projecting that the Community Runs will raise $11.5 MILLION for cancer research. There is no doubt that this group of relentless volunteers will finish it for Terry and us all.”

With nearly four decades behind it, the Tottenham run continues to honour Terry Fox’s legacy in a down-to-earth, family-friendly way.

Residents who walked, ran, or cycled this year helped keep that legacy moving forward.

If you have ideas, energy, or simply want to lace up next time, Short is asking local residents to consider joining the organizing team or or plan to participate next year.

Every step taken in Tottenham adds up to real support for cancer research and brings the town one step closer to helping Terry ‘finish it.’
