Hornets leading Penetang 3-0 in quarter-final series

The Alliston Hornets are poised to win their quarter-final North Carruthers Division playoff series with the Penetang Kings after hammering the Kings 9-4 in game three on Monday, Mar. 13, at the New Tecumeth Recreation Centre.

Game one of the series got underway in Alliston on Friday, Mar. 10.

It was a bit of a sloppy game, with Alliston taking 24 minutes in penalties and a ten-minute misconduct.

Penetang was leading 2-1 at the end of the second period.

The Hornets pulled it together in the third, scoring three to take the lead, then holding on for a 5-4 win to start the series.

The Hornets had three five-on-three penalty kills. One of them cost the Hornets a goal.

“There was a lot of penalties for both sides,” said Hornets goalie Rod Lewis. “There’s a lot of pressure in the game when they’ve got a man advantage. It puts pressure on the whole team. It’s playoff hockey with close games. We’ve been talking about penalties all year. I think we’re the most penalized team in our league.”

The second game of the series was held in Penetang the following night (Mar. 11).

This time the Hornets shut out the Kings for a 6-0 win.

Alliston’s goals came from Connor Hiles, Jakob Power, Andrew Maltby, Adam Hoppe, and two from Jack Micone.

Game three of the series returned to Alliston on Monday, Mar. 13.

Both teams scored single in the first frame.

The Hornets blasted it wide open in the second period, scoring four goals to lead 5-2.

They kept up the pressure in the third, scoring four more for a 9-4 win.

Game four of the series was scheduled in Penetang on Wednesday, Mar. 15, with results unavailable at press time.

If the series continues, game five will be in Alliston on Friday, Mar. 17, with a 7:30 p.m. start.

In the other North Carruthers quarter-final series, the Stayner Siskins lead the Midland Flyers, 3-0.

The Schomberg Cougars are winning 3-0 over the Huntsville Otters. The Orillia Terriers are leading 2-1 against the Innisfil Spartans.
