Matthews House Hospice drops the ball, the helicopter Moneyball that is!

By Wendy Gabrek

Matthews House Hospice (MHH) held its annual “Helicopter Ball Drop” and Golf Tournament on Wednesday, September 11 at Bear Creek Golf Course in Utopia.

Moneyball, the Helicopter Golf Ball Drop, is a fundraiser for the Alliston based hospice, a charitable organization, with an entry fee of $20 per ball. Participants were able to purchase as many balls as they wanted – with only 500 balls available, and unsold balls becoming the property of MHH.

The balls were dropped from the private helicopter of Marv Chantler, with his wife Moira dropping the balls while he piloted the craft.

On September 11, 500 golf balls were simultaneously dropped from a helicopter over a set circle on the ground of Island Course, Hole #9 at Bear Creek.  The three numbered balls landing closest to the circle were the winners.  Those winners are:

• 1st Place: $2,500, Ralph Douglas

• 2nd Place: $1,000, Clark Roylance

• 3rd Place: $500, Fernando Serraino

The Chantler’s were right on the money with this year’s drop, with the first place ball getting a hole-in-one!

The winners were announced immediately following the ball drop on the Matthews House Hospice website, Facebook and Instagram pages.

“[Our] winners were also notified by phone and email,” adds Andrea Roylance, Manager, Gifts and Gratitude, Matthews House Hospice.

Matthews House Hospice will host its premier annual fundraiser next Saturday, September 27 starting at 6 p.m., at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex in Alliston. Tickets for the Butterfly Ball are still available. Enjoy a fun-filled evening of delicious food options, intriguing auction items, live music, dancing and more.

Matthews House Hospice walks together with families through the journey of illness and grief.

“We offer a variety of day programs, counselling, palliative care and resident round-the-clock services for individuals suffering from illness and their families,” reads the MHH website ‘About Us’ page.
