Abilities in Motion hosts mid-summer regatta

July 15, 2022   ·   0 Comments

Abilities in Motion (AIM) will be hosting a summer regatta this month at Earl Rowe Provincial Park just outside of Alliston.

The organization promotes inclusive paddling and helps people with physical disabilities and mental challenges enjoy being on the water.

Abilities in Motion has active locations in Alliston and London.

The mid-summer regatta will be an opportunity to show the public what they do and how much members enjoy being able to spend time on the water.

AIM built a boathouse at the park several years ago to store their compliment of kayaks and canoes.

“We are a group to help people with physical and mental disabilities,” explained AIM member Edwin Heringa, who is also training to become an instructor. “I’ve been doing it so often I was asked to be an instructor. Myself and several others are going through the process of becoming new instructors. Through the summer, we have various like CLASS and similar organizations in other towns that come. They are given an opportunity to experience being on the water. We also train other groups. Just a few weeks ago I assisted in helping train kids in grade five and six. We also have scout groups, girl guide groups, schools and other groups as well as individuals who would like to learn.”

The regatta will take place over two days. The first day will be for organization staff, with the second day open for everyone including the public.

The plan for a regatta was created after the club had to close for the pandemic.

“We decided to have this regatta with eight events,” Edwin explained. “The first event is a parade of colours, with people in the canoes with funny hats and streamers. There will be a scavenger hunt along the shore line. We’ll have a big canoe project – this is a canoe that can hold up to 14 paddlers – it’s around 29 feet long. There were also be sprint events and slalom events.”

The event will take place on Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
