The Alliston Business Improvement Association (ABIA) has weighed in to report on its key areas of consideration regarding the short-term solution to parking challenges in Alliston’s downtown core.

The ABIA issued a letter to New Tecumseth council highlighting its recommendations.

While the ABIA board of directors generally agrees with the recommendations of a recent study to address parking challenges, it issued its own recommendations to be considered.

The ABIA is in support of the recommended switch to two-hour parking from four-hour parking, which was enforced from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, it recommends a 15-minute time limit in front of the Alliston Convenience store at 103 Victoria Street West and the Dry Cleaner to have a significant positive impact on these ‘quick stop’ businesses.

It also recommends four-hour parking in municipal parking lots as well as improved ‘Free Municipal Parking’ signage along Victoria Street West.

The ABIA would like to see proactive parking enforcement foot patrols and upkeep of surfaces and lighting of municipal parking lots.

It also is not in favour of metered parking areas to avoid keeping people away from the area who do not want to pay for parking.

The ABIA stated that while they have ideas and recommendation on long-term parking solutions, it feels that the focus should be on current parking challenges with a request that the ABIA be included in future long-term planning focus groups and workshops.
