The annual Kempenfelt Cup hockey tournament brought school spirit and the spirit of giving back to the Sadlon Arena in Barrie on Dec. 16 and 17.

Simcoe County District School Board schools from southwest Simcoe County battled on the ice to see who would bring home bragging rights this season, while also raising money for a variety of local charities.

Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School brought home the title with shoot-out victories in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions in the Kempenfelt Cup South competition.

Eastview Secondary School won both the boys’ and girls’ divisions in the Kempenfelt Cup Central competition.

The big winners are the charities supported by these events.

More than $21,500 was raised.

The Alliston Food Bank and Bradford Helping Hand Food Bank received $2,550.

Barrie and District Christmas Cheer received $19,000.

The SCDSB would like to thank the organizers of each tournament – Colin Bowins, vice-principal at Eastview SS, and Hayden Adams, teacher at Bradford District HS – as well as all of the staff and students who supported and participated in these events.
