The Alliston Hornets are maintaining first place in the North Carruthers Division of the Provincial Hockey League after winning both their weekend games.

They are two points ahead of the Stayner Siskins in the division standings.

There is already a good rivalry between Alliston and Stayner this year. The Siskins delivered the Hornets their only loss of the season so far.

In their first game of the weekend, the Hornets hosted the Innisfil Spartans at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (NTRC) on Friday, Oct. 16.

Hornets forward Will Hopcraft scored the only goal of the first period.

It was a 4-0 game when the Alliston squad scored three unanswered goals in the second frame to take command of the game.

Hornets’ goals came from Cole Skidmore, Noah Prokopec, and Gunner Kirk.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard with a goal two minutes into the third period.

The rest of the period turned into a turkey shoot for the Hornets when they scored six goals to end the game 10-1.

Third-period Alliston goals came from Benjamin Smith, Liam Carroll, Tristen Pitt, Landon Henry, and two from Nick Lamont.

The Hornets played their second game of the weekend when they went on the road and travelled up to Huntsville to take on the Otters.

It was a 3-0 game when the Hornets scored three first-period goals.

Alliston scorers were Tyler Jacome-Schutz and two from Nick Lamont.

The Hornets sealed the deal on this game when they scored four more unanswered goals in the second period.

Second-period Alliston goals came from Tristen Pitt, Benjamin Smith, Nolan Caruso, and Duncan Grube.

There was no scoring in the third period, and the Hornets left the ice with a 7-0 shutout.

The four points from the weekend keep the Hornets in first place in the division. They have taken a single loss.

In second place, the Stayner Siskins have played two more games than the Hornets but have taken four losses this season.

The Penetang Kings are tied for third place with the Orillia Terriers. Both teams have a 6-2 record.

The Muskoka Bears are in fifth place, followed by the Midland Flyer and the Innisfil Spartans.

In the basement, the Huntsville Otters have a 2-10 record.

Alliston and Stayner’s rivalry will heat up again this week when the two teams play on Stayner home ice on Thursday, Oct. 22.

The Hornets will return to home ice on Friday, Oct. 23, when they will host the Midland Flyers at the NTRC.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
