It was a low-scoring game, but the Alliston Hornets still came out ahead after an overtime win over the Muskoka Bears at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Hornets just couldn’t find the back of the net in this game.
The Bears scored the only first-period goal midway through the first frame.
Alliston forward Ducan Grube tied it up at 1:46 into the second period.
Muskoka went ahead with a goal at 9:22 on the clock.
It was again a tied game when Noah Cochrane scored with 4:06 remaining in the second period.
Neither team could score in the third period, and the game went into overtime to determine a winner.
It was all over when Liam Carroll scored with 3:33 remaining in overtime to give the Hornets a win and avoid a tie game.
“It was one of those night where the puck wasn’t going our way sometimes,” is how Alliston forward Duncan Grube described the low score and the Hornets’ failure to bury the puck.
“It was one of those nights where the puck wasn’t bouncing our way, but we were playing good and keeping positive on the bench. I think we really pushed the pace really well tonight; we kept puck going north-south and put the pressure on their ‘D.’ Our transition game was going really good,” Grube added.
The Hornets were short-benched during this game after losing four key players to injuries.
Grube said the short bench means the other guys just have to step up and fill those slots.
“Obviously it affects us, but everyone is ready to take the next step up,” Grube said. “I think everyone tonight did a really good job of stepping up and playing well.”
The Hornets are maintaining first place in the North Carruthers Division with 22 points and an 11-2 record.
The Hornets will be back on home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Nov. 6, when they will host the Orillia Terriers.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
