The Alliston Lions Club has launched a new initiative in partnership with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
They are collecting unwanted smart cell phones that can repurposed for people who are visually challenged.
The phones can be modified to assist people with visual impairment by providing magnification and flashlights. They can turn a voice into a text format and create a voice from incoming messages.
In addition, the repurposed phones can be adapted to use a larger screen. There are several other modifications to cell phones that can used to help people with visual impairments.
The Lions are embarking on a new challenge of collecting used photos and donating them to CNIB.
The CNIB cleans, disinfects, erases data, and repurposes these phones for people in the New Tecumseth area.
If you have an unwanted phone, you can drop it off at the drop box in front of the Lions Hall at 60 Boyne Street in Alliston.
Other drop-off locations will be announced in the future.
