Tennis is a sport that requires skill and good hand-eye coordination.

It is also a great way to keep fit and active.

The Alliston Tennis Club hosted a drop-in night on Friday, July 17, encouraging those interested in the sport to come out and try it.

The club is located at the North end of G.A. Wright Athletic Field in Alliston and features three courts.

Mostly active in the summer with recreational tennis, they do leave one court open and clear during the winter months in case it warms up and someone wants to play a game.

The club has been operating for more than 50 years and currently has around 130 members. It is a partnership between the club, Banting Memorial High School, and the Town of New Tecumseth, with each organization contributing to upkeep and maintenance.

“We open as soon as the weather is nice in April,” explained Mary Parsons, a club board member. “But any member could play at any time because we usually keep one court open all year long. We always do a new registration in April. Today, is a drop-in social. We did one in May, and one in June, and this is our final one this year, and non-members can come out and try the sport and maybe garner some interest in it. Members can bring out friends or members of their family.”

On drop-in day, some people rallied on the court while others just came out to practice their serve.

“We don’t have leagues here, we have drop in times,” Mary explained. “We have dedicated groups that come as well as new members. There’s a ladies-friendly Monday and Friday mornings. People just come when they want to.”

It is a sport with a strong social element, and people enjoy the camaraderie of playing as much as the physical aspect of the game.
