If you have property that you would like to see deliver some shade, stabilize the ground, or just beautify your surroundings, the Nottawasaga Conservation Authority’s annual Arbour Day Tree Sale will be the place to find a variety of different bareroot tree and shrub seedlings.
The sale will take place at the Tiffin Conservation Area in Utopia.
There will be a variety of trees available to choose from.
These include White Pine, Red Pine, White Spruce, Norway Spruce, White Cedar, Tamrack, European Larch, Red Oak, Bur Oak, and Bitternut Hickory.
Also included are Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, Black Walnut, Black Cherry, Nannyberry, and Red Osier Dogwood.
Tree availability is first-come, first-served, and cannot be reserved.
The best way to care for your new seedlings is to plant them right away when you bring them home.
For best results, do not open storage bags until you are ready to plant. Reseal partially used storage bands as quickly as possible.
Load planting pails in the shade and out of the wind, and place seedlings quickly into the planting pail.
Do not prune roots, especially if you see new white root tips.
Place seedlings in an upright position and pack loosely so the removal will not damage the tender roots.
If you can’t plant your seedlings right away, take precautions while storing them.
Store the seedlings in a cool, shaded area and water frequently with fresh water.
Provide good ventilation and avoid placing seedlings in direct sunlight, standing water, or low-lying frost pockets.
Do not open the storage bags until you are ready to plant.
Ideally, plant the trees within five days of purchase for the best results.
NVCA provides professional tree-planting services for property owners in the Nottawasaga Watershed with over two acres of planting space.
Properties with over 4.5 hectares (11 acres) in size may be eligible for the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program.
At the Arbour Day sale, trees and shrubs are sold in bundles of 10 for $40 each.
The NVCA Arbour Day sale will take place on Saturday, May 9, at the Tiffin Conservation Area, 8195 8th Line, in Utopia, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
