An arson incident at a homeless encampment in Alliston has resulted in its safe removal from private property.

The Nottawasaga OPP began an arson investigation at a property located in Alliston near Young Street on Monday, June 17, at approximately 7:30 p.m.

A dispute between multiple individuals at the site resulted in a tent being set on fire and destroyed.

No injuries were reported.

New Tecumseth Fire Rescue attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

The decision to dismantle the encampment follows thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers, and public health experts, according to the OPP.

Comprehensive support services and networks were made available including temporary shelter options, mental health counselling, substance abuse treatment referrals, and access to healthcare facilities.

The removal of the encampment, which was on private property, was carried out on June 18.

The OPP, along with community partners, aims to collectively ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved while providing access to essential services and resources.

As a result of the arson investigation, 32-year-old Rebecca Rogers from New Tecumseth has been arrested and charged with, Arson – Damage to property.

The charge has not been proven in court.

The accused has been held for a bail hearing.
