Never give up. That was the theme of Saturday’s (June 25) senior NDBL game between the Alliston Athletics and the Ivy Leafs.
The game got a quick start when Ivy put one out of the park in the second pitch of the game to lead by one.
The game was tied in the fourth when Zack Riddell hit a double that brought in the first Alliston run and tied the game.
Jordan Brewer got a single then stole second base to give the Athletics men on first and third.
That was followed up with a double to centre field by Mac Sealy that brought in two Alliston runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The fifth inning had the Leafs getting some big hits including a ground rule double when the ball bounced over the centre field fence. Another big hit to deep centre brought in two runs to tied the game. A second hit that brought in two more Leafs runs. A drive down the third base line bought enough time for a runner to cross the plate and Ivy was leading 7-3.
Alliston scored a single run in the fifth inning when Cole Quilan hit over the fence for a single run home run. It was his fourth HR of the season.
With a three-run deficit and two at-bats left, the Alliston squad put in the effort and got the bats moving in the sixth inning.
Zack Riddell hit a drive down the third base line then made a hard sprint to beat the throw at first.
With men on second and third, Mac Sealy stepped up and hit to a hole in the field that brought in two runs.
With a man on third and one out, the Athletics where in good scoring position. Cole Quinlan hit to deep left to bring in two runners and the Alliston squad took an 8-7 lead.
“We don’t give up,” said Athletics coach Colin Iddison. “We’ve come back against a few good teams in this league. We had a good defence tonight and we didn’t give up.”
It was the squad’s fifth win of the season.
The Athletics will be in New Lowell tonight (June30) to take on the Knights.
They will return to their home field at Riverdale Park in Alliston on Sunday, July 3, to host the Nobleton Cornhuskers.

Athletics drop two
The squad travelled to Aurora on June 14, to take on the Jays.
It was the second game in a row the Alliston squad played against Aurora. On June 12 the two teams met up with the Athletics taking a loss 7-6.
The game highlight was a three-run home run by Alliston’s Cole Quinnlan.
When the teams met up for the second game the Athletics got a little payback and got the bats moving to end the night with a 9-8 win – their fourth game on the plus side this season.
The team returned to their home diamond at Riverdale Park on June 19 night to host the Clearview Orioles.
This time the Athletics just couldn’t cross home plate and had to settle for an 8-0 loss.
