The Banting Memorial High School Marauders senior girls’ flag football team will be going to the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) championship game after winning both of their playoff games on home turf on Thursday, Oct. 23.
The Marauders entered the playoffs as an undefeated team, going 6-0 for the regular season and finishing in first place.
In five of those games, the Marauders blanked the opposition and didn’t allow a single point against.
Going into the playoffs, the quarter-final and semi-final games were scheduled to be played on the same day.
The Marauders faced Bradford District School in the quarter-final, which got underway on the field at Banting at 11 a.m.
Bradford arrived on the field with a 3-3 record and was the bottom team among the eight teams with a playoff berth.
The Marauders played well and won 25-1.
They had to wait for the outcome of the quarter-final between Nantyr Shores Secondary School from Innisfil and Eastview Secondary School from Barrie.
Nantyr Shores won that game 14-0 to advance to the semi-final game.
That set up the semi-final between Banting and Nantyr Shores with a 3 p.m. start.
Nantry Shore scored the first TD of the game for an early lead.
The Marauders battled back and scored with the extra point to lead by a single point.
They scored again in the second half, and Banting won 19-6.
“The first game was good, but we had a rough start,” said Banting quarterback Celina Whittaker of the game against Bradford. “We picked it up in the second half. They scored first and it kind of rattled us.”
The semi-final against Nantyy Shores proved to be a competitive game.
Banting stepped up when they had to and got the win.
“We realized we need to score touchdowns, and throw better and catch them and run different routes,” Celina said. “We were strong and fast, getting open and finding ways to get open.”
The Marauders will now face Orillia Secondary School for the SCAA championship.
That game will take place on Thursday, Oct. 30, on the field at Banting.
Game time is 2:30 p.m.
