The Beeton Lawn Bowling Club will be hosting its 2nd annual Lawn Summer Night to raise funds for a good cause.

The event is a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Canada.

Organizer Andrea Torlone is the mother of a three-year-old boy who suffers from cystic fibrosis.

Last year, the event raised $22,000, and they are hoping to raise even more this year.

For club member Walton Prime of Beeton, the event is part of a personal experience and he urges others to help raise funds.

“In 1974, my 15-month-old daughter was diagnosed with CF,” Walton explained. “Her life expectancy was stated to be age 13. With research and new drugs for treatment, she lived until 2001, age 27. In the past 24 years since her death, major breakthroughs in drug research is continuing to improve the wellbeing and lifespan of those affected by CF.”

There are 4,513 Canadians living with cystic fibrosis. That’s an increase of 42.6 per cent since 2003. Just over one-third of Canada’s cystic fibrosis population are children.

More than one-third of people with cystic fibrosis in Canada travel over 100 kilometres to receive care.

Today, half of Canadian both with cystic fibrosis are expected to live beyond 62 years. This is a 2.5-year improvement over the life expectancy of 2022, and the median age of death rose to 41.2 years of age.

Since life-changing CFTR modulator therapies were introduced in Canada, there has been a drop in the number of lung transplants.

Lawn Summer Night will take place on Friday, July 4, with a rain date of July 11 if needed.

The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. However, attendees are invited to join early at 4:30 p.m. to mingle and grab a bite to eat.

The event will take place at the Beeton Lawn Bowling Club at 60 Prospect St., Beeton.

There will be more than 80 bowlers on the green at one time as matches are played.

Those wishing to donate can make a donation on the night of the event or directly through the club’s website at www.lawnsummernights.com.

If you have any questions about the event, contact Andrea Torlone at 416-578-6018.
