The debate over the extension of health  benefits to retirees over 65 and members of council at Adjala-Tosorontio appears likely to continue.
Council heard a delegation from two township residents at their last meeting, who asked for a complete chronology for the extension of the benefits since 1997 and the total costs of the benefits for each retired township employee and member of council  to 2025.
The joint request from Annette Bays and Janet Budgell also asked for the Township to embark with lawsuit agains the insurance company who provided the benefits without allegedly property approval. Legal action against the past and present employees of the township and council who authorized the awarding of benefits without proper council approval should also be considered.
“If we do hold accountable those people who are responsible for this debacle, it will further incriminate this council in the future,” said Janet Budgell.
The residents also asked for legal action against the Township’s auditors, BDO, for not verifying their actions on implementing the benefits package.
They also asked for the immediate rescinding for post retirement benefits in the future for already retired  and active employees.
Tempers flared after the presentation when councillor Floyd Pinto asked to place a discussion of the issues raised by the delegation later in the agenda.
His request came during the period reserved for questions of those making a delegation.
Mayor Mary Small Brett turned down the request as out of order and not appropriate at that time.
Pinto told council that he would then be forced to “to sue council and I’ll show council.”
Council voted to receive the delegation from Bays and Budgell. No other action was taken on their requests during the meeting.
