Life can change in seconds, and someone you know may urgently need blood to stay alive.

There is no substitute for donated blood – it is a critical part of everyday medical care, including major surgeries, medical procedures, cancer treatments and managing diseases and disorders.

Distribution of blood to hospitals is outpacing the number of blood donations being made, especially in Ontario, where nearly half of Canada’s population lives.

While Canadian Blood Services manages a national inventory and blood is moved around the country, the blood system depends on donors showing up across Canada, including right here in New Tecumseth.

Roughly 10 million people in Ontario are eligible to donate blood, yet only a fraction do. Just 1.5 per cent of the population donate blood. Blood donors help ensure over 140 hospitals in Ontario receive more than 31,000 units of blood every month.

More than 4,000 new blood donors are needed every month in Ontario. More than 48,000 new blood donors are needed this year in Ontario.

There are two blood donor events coming up in New Tecumseth.

Canadian Blood Services will be in Alliston on Thursday, Nov. 23, at the Alliston Memorial Arena from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

There will be a blood donor clinic at the Tottenham Community Centre on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

You can book a time to donate by visiting blood.ca or by calling 1-888-2Donate.
