Blood donor clinics coming to Alliston, Tottenham

The demand for blood and plasma is rising, but there are not enough donors to keep up with the increasing demand. 

On average across the country, there are around 230 new donors each day. To meet the growing need for blood and plasma, that number needs to double.

Canadian Blood Services is calling people across the country to be one of the 450 new donors needed every day this winter.

More patients need blood products than over the past decade due to an increase in surgeries and treatments that require blood products. This is due to the fact that the population is aging and growing.

One in two Canadians are eligible to give blood, yet only one in 76 actually does.

There are many ways to help, and each action means saving lives in different ways.

You can become a blood, platelet, or plasma donor. Blood products have a limited shelf life, which is why the need is constant. One donation could save three lives.

Join the stem cell registry – you could be a match for the nearly 1,000 people in Canada who are waiting for a stem cell transplant.

Register your intent to donate organs and tissues to help more than 4,000 people in Canada who are waiting for an organ transplant.

There are two blood donor clinics coming to New Tecumseth in January.

There will be a clinic at Alliston Memorial Arena, 49 Nelson Street W., Alliston, on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

There will be a clinic at the Tottenham Community Centre in Tottenham, 139 Queen Street North, on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
