Charges laid after train hits vehicle, two dead, three injured

Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, with the assistance of the Nottawasaga Major Crime Unit, have made an arrest and laid charges relating to a fatal collision investigation that claimed the lives of two people and seriously injured three others.

Those injured includes the driver of the vehicle that was struck by a CP train.

On Oct. 13, 2021, shortly after 11:00 p.m., OPP and emergency services responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a train and a passenger vehicle with five occupants. The collision occurred at the rail crossing on Nolan Road (5th Line) on the north side of Tottenham.

One vehicle occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining occupants were transported to a hospital. One other passenger succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

As a result of the investigation, Jarmanjeet Singh, 29, was arrested with assistance from United States Customs and Border Protection on Apr. 13, 2023.

Singh is charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death – two counts, Criminal Negligence Cause Bodily harm – two counts, Obstruct Justice – two counts, Fail to Give Way to Railway Equipment at a Road Crossing, as per Railway Safety Act.

The accused is being held pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice. These charges have not been proven in court.
