Charges laid for murder of New Tecumseth man

The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has arrested and charged one individual in connection with a suspicious death investigation.

The death has been ruled a homicide.

William Schernhammer, 24, from the Town of New Tecumseth, was reported missing on Jan. 12.

On Jan. 21, at approximately 8:40 p.m. his body was discovered on a rural property in Adjala-Tosorontio.

On Jan. 21, police arrested and charged Gabriel DiCecco, 25, of the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio under the Criminal Code, with Obstruct Peace Officer, section 129 (a), and Indignity to a Dead Body, section 182 (b).

Upon further investigation, the accused was charged with First Degree Murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code, and remanded into custody.

The Nottawasaga OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services and Central Region Support Team in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
