Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre visits Beeton on whistle-stop tour

Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre visited two locations as part of a whistle-stop tour across the region on Thursday, Aug. 20.

The MP visited Borden Metal Products on Dayfoot St. and toured the facility while speaking with staff employed there.

He then went to the soon-to-be-opened Chantler Centre on 10th Sideroad and learned about the facility while speaking to staff and touring the former elementary school, which is being transformed into a centre to support children and families living with autism in Simcoe County.

Mr. Poilievre toured the entire facility and learned how it will benefit local children. He asked many questions and complimented staff on how they are preparing the facility to welcome children.

After the tour, he took the time to speak with a members of a local union who had come to see him, as well as members of the media, who were given the opportunity to speak to the Conservative leader and ask questions.

When asked what the most important challenge the nation is currently facing, Mr. Poilievre replied, “The cost of living.”

“No question – people can’t afford to live in Canada anymore,” Poilievre said. “Young people can’t afford homes, families can’t afford groceries, it costs $100 to fill up at the pump – it’s just not affordable.”

He continued, “I just met [a person] at our last stop, and he said ‘I work overtime, and by the time they tax my overtime, I take the money home and try to buy groceries, pay for my lodging and gas, I have nothing left.’”

Poilievre said the increase in fuel prices is making other items spike in price because of transportation costs.

“First of all, we should get rid of all taxes on fuel until at least Canada Day,” he said. “That would save you 25 cents a litre, $20 per fill up, and around $1,000 per family in direct fuel costs between now and July 1, 2027. It would also lower the cost for our farmers and truckers who bring us our food, and would lower the costs of fertilizer and other inputs that go into the food chain.”

Poilievre went on to visit Spectra Aluminum Products in Bradford before continuing to the Gretzky Pickleball Club in Hamilton to complete his day.
