New Tecumseth council has approved the immediate and full release of its $750,000 pledge to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) in support of the hospital’s revitalization.

The funds come from the town’s Hospital Contribution Reserve.

This decision significantly advances the hospital’s redevelopment fundraising and will allow the town’s contribution to be doubled.

At council’s April 27 meeting, Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) shared that construction of the addition is now officially underway, marking a major milestone in the long-anticipated project.

Council determined that releasing the full pledge of $750,000 at this time would best serve the community by maximizing matching opportunities. By releasing the full pledge now – well in advance of the 2028 deadline – the town’s entire contribution qualifies for full matching, resulting in an effective total contribution of $1.5 million toward the hospital’s campaign.

The Every Dollar Counts matching campaign matches up to $4 million over three years, with the potential to generate a total of $8 million in vital support.

The matching commitment is being provided by the Morningview Foundation.

“Council recognized this was an opportunity to significantly amplify the Town’s investment in local healthcare,” said New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. “With construction underway, releasing the entire pledge now allows our contribution to go further, faster — doubling its value and helping ensure the new Stevenson Memorial Hospital is equipped to serve New Tecumseth residents and surrounding communities for decades to come.”

The funding supports the ‘Because of You’ Campaign. This transformative initiative, led by the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation, aims to enhance healthcare delivery in the region.

“We are deeply grateful for this $750,000 contribution,” said Dr. Ted Vandevis, Steveson Memorial Hospital Foundation CEO. “It’s a strong vote of confidence in our vision and a catalyst for the transformational change our new hospital will deliver. I was humbled when Council confirmed the Town of New Tecumseth’s full pledge, helping kick-start the final half of our $80 million Capital Campaign. My sincere thanks to Mayor Norcross and Council for their generous, forward‑looking support.”

The redevelopment project for Stevenson Memorial Hospital will feature modernized, expanded clinical spaces designed to meet the region’s growing needs.
