The Creemore Padres are the 2022 North Dufferin Baseball League Junior division champions after winning 11-10 over the Mansfield Cubs in the final game.
The series went four games and finished in Mansfield on Tuesday, August 23.
The teams met in Creemore for Game Four on Monday, August 22, but a heavy downpour flooded the diamond and made conditions unplayable.
The game was scrubbed after the fourth inning and the game moved to Mansfield the next day.
In the final game, the Padres took an early lead then moved ahead by five runs in the third inning.
Mansfield made a comeback in the fourth inning, with three runs then came within one run of tying in the fifth.
With the sun getting low in the horizon, the umpires had already let coaching staff know that the fading light was most likely going to bring an early end to the game.
The game was called at the end of the fifth inning and the Creemore team took the win.
The Padres beat all the odds this season. After winning only one game in the regular season, Creemore stormed through the playoffs knocking out the first place Caledon Nationals in the first round, then dispatching the second place Orillia Royals in the second round to earn the right to go to the championship.
Mansfield finished the season in third place then went on to eliminate the Barrie Baycats and the Georgina Bulldogs to earn a place in the final.
“It was an awesome season,” said Mansfield Cubs coach Lance Bryon. “Last year we had a shortened ten-game season just to get back into baseball. We didn’t win many games. This season, to beat Georgina with two walk-offs was awesome. These guys were excited to play anyone this season – they had a good run. The dedication of these players was there for the team effort, and they played well.”
In the NDBL senior division, the second round of playoffs has been completed.
The championship will match up the Bolton Brewers with the New Lowell Knights in a best-of-seven series.
