After 30 years of helping local residents and other patients who arrive from a considerable distance, Dr. Kent Newton says he has enjoyed every year of those three decades and has no plans to give up his chiropractic practice anytime soon.
Dr. Kent, as he is known to patients and staff, took over Alliston Chiropractic Wellness Centre when the former chiropractor Dr. Gordon Burgess retired in 1996.
“I didn’t choose this job, it chose me,” Dr. Kent said of how he discovered chiropractic medicine as a youth, then went on to learn more and study it.
“I was able to capitalize on Dr. Burgess’ experience. He was a chiropractor for 30 years. I would ask him questions, and he would mentor me. You can learn from someone who has more experience. Since then, it’s been 30 years, I have seen grandparents, parents, kids, and their kids.”’
Dr. Kent started learning about chiropractic when he was a youth.
“I grew up in Scarborough, and my mom used to take us to a chiropractor,” Dr. Kent explained. “I was under chiropractic care since I was around eight years old. I knew about it but it wasn’t going be my career. I went to university and my chiropractor asked me what I was going to do with my life. At the time, I said ‘I don’t know.’ He invited me to come to his office and follow him for the summer, so I did. I saw what he did and, and really fell in love with it.”
That experience led to a new career for Dr. Kent.
He sees patients of all ages from babies to senior citizens. While most of his patients live in the region, he has many who have moved away but still return to see him for treatment from as far away as Orillia and Parry Sound.
“I love working here in this community,” Dr. Kent said. “We see so many different people. We see a lot of farmers and a lot of people who work in IT and are working at home online. We have a lot of patients who play rugby, hockey, and pickleball. Monday is our baby day. Last Monday we saw five babies that were under the age of 10 months. The joke is ‘womb to tomb.’ We work with pregnant moms and all the way up to grandparents. We also do acupuncture. We use small needles and try to create a body reaction. Sometimes we use it to break up muscle spasms, sometimes for pain control, and we can help people to stop smoking.”
An enthusiastic and friendly person with a passion for his work, Dr. Kent takes great satisfaction in hearing back from clients who are experiencing good results from his treatment.
“When we had our anniversary celebration here, it was really quite emotional because we heard a lot of stories that we didn’t actually hear before,” he explained. “We heard fantastic stuff, like ‘you really helped my son so he is getting back to playing hockey, or, my husband is able to cut the grass again.’ They are such great success stories.”
It is those success stories that keep Dr. Kent motivated and passionate about his work. After three decades serving the community, he said he has no plans to retire and hopes to continue for another 30 years.
“I love my job and I love what I do. I am very grateful for the people I have been able to help. I take my job very seriously, but we still have a lot of fun here. I love doing it so I’m not going anywhere.”
