My Sister’s Place in Alliston will host its annual Hats, Heels, and High Tea fundraiser to not only raise funds but also recognize International Women’s Day.
The event will be held at the Club at Bond Head on Saturday, March 7.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 of each year.
My Sister’s Place helps women in transition by providing shelter and other necessary support.
The High Tea event gives women a chance to enjoy a social afternoon and learn more about My Sister’s Place’s efforts.
This year, former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynn will be a guest speaker.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” explained Cindy Curry, My Sister’s Place fundraising coordinator. “We have to raise over $300,000 each year with our fundraising efforts, so this is an important day for us. This is our signature event of the year. The funds raised at this event all go directly to the shelter, both in-shelter services and our outreach programs. We also create some awareness about International Women’s Day. We have Kathleen coming to speak this year.”
My Sister’s Place, as well as other women’s shelters across the province, play an important role in helping women who are in transition for a variety of reasons.
“Our Sister’s Place is there for women and children who are suffering the consequences of violence and abuse,” Ms. Curry explained. “We help them find housing and we help them with legal advocacy. A lot of our in-shelter and outreach services are counselling based. We can hook them up with other organizations in the communities we serve. We serve all of South Simcoe, so we hook them up with other agencies that can help them with education, employment, and whatever they need to sort of help them get back on their own feet and set them up for success.”
The High Tea is a luncheon featuring sandwiches, sweets, tea, of course, a silent auction, a photo booth, and live music.
The event has become so popular that this year’s event has already sold out.
In keeping with the International Women’s Day theme, the event will also feature displays highlighting famous women in various roles who have helped shape our society.
