The annual “Hike for Hospice,” a 2-kilometre stroll or 5-km hike, is set to take place on May 1 from the Adjala-Tosorontio Municipal Office.
Last year, this event raised more than $80,000 for Matthews House Hospice, serving the communities of New Tecumseth, Essa, Adj-Tos and surrounding area.
Registration for this year’s event starts at 11 a.m., and the Hike goes from noon until 1:30 p.m.
“May is such a great month at hospice because it is the time when staff, board, volunteers, donors and supporters get together to show their support for hospice palliative care and to raise money specifically for Matthews House by participating in our second largest annual fundraiser, Hike for Hospice,” said Kelly Girard, coordinator, events and volunteerism, Matthews House Hospice. “Hike for Hospice is a unique national fundraising event that raises awareness and funds for hospice. All the funds raised by our local Hike come direct to Matthews House, helping us to continue to support people in our community.”
Matthews House offers a number of programs to help people in the community, free of charge.
Through its community hospice, Matthews House helps people living with a life-limiting illness and those caring for an ill loved one. They also help with the grieving process post loss.
“Matthews House offers an integrative and holistic approach to support for individuals and their families in our community. For this reason, Matthews House Hospice offers community programs in three streams of support which are broad and responsive to individual interests and needs. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of our clients and their caregivers,” reads the Mathews House mission statement.
Matthews House also operates a four bedroom residential hospice in Alliston that opened on August 6th, 2013.
“We are currently the largest residential hospice in the CLHIN and our four beds help fill the gap for hospice palliative care beds in our community,” reads a statement on the website.
