Hornets take a loss in home opener

September 22, 2022   ·   0 Comments

The Alliston Junior C Hornets started the season with a loss when they hosted the Schomberg Cougars at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, September 16.

It was the Alliston team’s season and home opener to start the 2022/23 schedule.

The Hornets were up by one early in the first period on the only goal in the frame by Andrew Maltby.

During the second period, there were a lot of chances but neither team could hit the back of the net and the Hornets returned for the final period with a one goal advantage.

It was a tie game when the Cougars scored at just 48 seconds into the period. Schomberg pulled ahead with a second goal the 6:38 mark into the frame.

Alliston’s Jacob English tied the game at two, just seconds 36 later, to make it a fight to end with just over 13 minutes remaining on the clock.

It came down to the final minute when Schomberg scored to break the tie with 33 seconds left on the clock to take the 3-2 win.

Rod Lewis was in goal for the Hornets making 35 saves for the night.

The Hornets squad has a lot of new names on the roster this year as many players could not return due to work or school commitments, so it will take a while to see how the team gels as a unit as they get deeper into the season.

There are nine teams in the North Carruthers Division this year with the addition of the Innisfil Spartans.

The Hornets will be back on home ice this Friday, September 23, when they host the Midland Flyers at the NTRC.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
