A technical failure closed both ice pads at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (NTRC) in Alliston, but the shutdown lasted only a couple of days.
The town announced that both iced pads had been closed due to technical issues with the compressor.
The pads were closed on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and it was anticipated that they would be closed for a minimum of two weeks, although that time frame was an estimate. It was thought that the ice surfaces may be closed for a longer period of time.
The town was working to determine the next steps for repairing or replacing the ‘failed and aging’ equipment.
While the ice pads were closed, the facility remained open. The fitness centre and fieldhouse were available for regular drop-in and registered programming.
The ice closure had an immediate effect on both minor and junior hockey.
The TNT Tornados Minor Hockey Association announced, “This will definitely impact our programming but we are not sure to what extent at this point.”
The Tornados also play some games at the Tottenham Community Centre Arena.
The Alliston Junior C Hornets had to postpone two games. The Wednesday, Feb. 8, home game against the Schomberg Cougars, and the Friday, Feb. 10, game against the Orillia Terriers were postponed. They are expected to be rescheduled to complete the PJHL regular season schedule.
However, the town announced that they had come up with a temporary solution using a portable unit that had been installed and the ice would be ready late in the day on Feb. 8.
The Hornets game for Feb. 10, was put back on the schedule.
