After several years playing as the Clearview IceCats, the local female hockey organization is changing its name to better reflect its home base.
The team will now be known as the New Tecumseth IceCats.
The IceCats play out of Alliston and Tottenham, so changing the name made sense, as many people thought the designation Clearview referred to the Township. Many local players would sign up with other organizations they thought would be closer to home.
“The ‘Clearview’ title was a little bit deceptive,” explained Jordan Jeans, who coaches with the U9 IceCats team. “We were playing in New Tecumseth, and all of the arenas we were playing out of were in Alliston, Tottenham, and Beeton. Parents and families weren’t able to find us. They thought we were in a different region. People still thought we were up in Clearview, and that’s a bit of a drive.”
The idea to change the name began during COVID. The team required approval from the OWHA to make the switch.
“The area is growing, and the organization is also growing,” Jordan said. “We are adding more teams, so this makes more sense for players in the region.
The IceCats are retaining their familiar logo – only the team name will be changed.
House league teams will be back on the ice early in September. Some rep teams have already had a few sessions on the ice to get ready for this season.
The IceCats have teams ranging from U9 house league up to U18 BB and U18 AA teams. They also have a Senior B division.
