Kat Chabot starts off Sunday Concerts in the Park

The Sunday Concerts in the Park are again happening every weekend at Keogh Park in Tottenham.

Singer/song writer Kat Chabot started off the series with a performance on Sunday, August 1.

Kat, who lives in Barrie, has been performing solo and with a band for years after growing up in a musical family.

She was asked to come to Tottenham and perform by several friends she knows in town who are involved with the concert series.

Kat performed a mix of cover tunes and original songs for an audience who appreciated her talent.

“I was blessed to grow up in a family that plays music,” Kat said of her start in music. “Me and my brothers all performed since I was about ten. My family band was called Slow Rush – we covered Rush songs and Journey songs. I was on piano, my dad was on guitar, my brother on drums, and my other brother on bass. It was a lot of time in the basement learning all the parts.”

After performing for several years, Kat began performing solo with her guitar.

“Music is very therapeutic for me, and since it was an outlet I’ve had since I was a child, I really learned to love it,” Kat explained. “With piano, you can’t really bring it with you. With a guitar you can put it in a bag and take it with you. I brought my guitar to university and dove into it. I’ve always written songs, so I started singing.”

While her on-stage guitar performance leans toward a folk style, she said her background is definitely more in the rock genre.

Kat is now working on putting together an CD.

“I am working on an album. I’ve put out two songs already, and I’ll have ten this year. We’re trying to have every sort of genre on it. There’s a rock song and bunch of others as well.”

Kat performed solo in Tottenham, but also plays with a band.

“I love playing in bands,” she said. “I prefer a band – I love being with people and playing. I just want music to be in my life no matter what. I really love playing at events – I want to see where my music takes me.”

The Sunday Concerts in the Park series continues through the summer every Sunday afternoon.
