If you ever wondered how you can make the city or town where you live a better place to live, consider volunteering your services and skills to a local organization that could use your help.

All the charities and community organizations serving New Tecumseth do wonderful work meeting the needs of families, the disabled, the homeless, the hungry, and the unemployed.

There is a not-for-profit organization willing to support pretty much anyone in the community who needs help.

To start, you can assess your own skills to decide what you have to offer. This can be very helpful in determining which organization you may best be able to help.

This can be especially beneficial to an organization when a retired person is available to help after having a long career in a related field.

Consider an activity in which you have a special interest. This may help guide you to an organization where you will benefit from what you may learn and enjoy the experience while helping others at the same time.

It can be very satisfying to be part of an organization where you truly enjoy what you are doing and know your contributions are making a difference.

When deciding to volunteer, you should consider how often you will be available and the level of commitment you can dedicate to pursuing volunteer activities. Determine how much time you can be available, the days of the week when you can commit, and your own personal schedule, so you can mark your volunteer days on the calendar.

There are several ways you can learn about volunteering in the community.

Most organizations have contact information online where you can inquire.

“Volunteers are the cornerstone of CONTACT Community Services,” said Brenda Pufek, manager of community engagement & development at CONTACT Community Services. “For over 46 years, dedicated members of our community have generously contributed their time and skills to support our Clothes Line stores, seniors’ programs, local fundraisers, and outreach, making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”

Pufek added, “Volunteering is a selfless endeavor that not only assists those in need in our local community but also enriches the lives of our local volunteers. It offers individuals a sense of purpose, the chance to develop new skills, and often leads to lasting friendships.”

There are volunteer fairs held locally throughout the year where charitable organizations get together in one place to find new volunteers.

This is an opportunity for charities and community organizations to share their story, let you know what they are all about, and explain the ways you can help.

Volunteer Connections is a website hosted by CONTACT Community Services that provides information about volunteering opportunities in South Simcoe. The website lists volunteer openings in different cities and towns in the region.

You can search the town where you live for organizations seeking volunteers.

The site has information about volunteer activities, including interests and new opportunities as well as many different categories that may interest a person who is considering volunteering.

You can visit the website at: www.southsimcoecic.cioc.ca.
