Mayor’s Bursary Golf Tournament supports local residents in post-secondary education

New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross hosted the fourth annual Charity Bursary Cup Classic on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Nottawasaga Resort.

This popular nine-hole scramble tournament brings together community members, local leaders, and supporters for a day of fun playing golf and fundraising in support of the Mayor’s Student Bursary Program.

The program provides financial assistance to New Tecumseth students attending Banting Memorial High School, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School, or any other accredited educational institution in town who are pursuing post-secondary education opportunities, including apprenticeship programs.

In addition to playing a round of golf, tournament supporters enjoyed a barbecue lunch before the start and a dinner reception after the golfing wrapped up. 

“This is the Mayor’s Bursary Golf Tournament where we fundraise for local students who are going on to post-secondary education, so we can help them with a donation or bursary award that will help pay for their schooling,” explained New Tecusmeth Mayor Richard Norcross at the start of the tournament. 

“The bursary helps anyone who is pursuing post-secondary education and it helps them further their education and reduce the costs. This is the fourth year I’ve been running this golf tournament. Over the last three years we’ve given out approximately $150,000 to local children.”

The tournament was sold out with a full complement of golfers to fill the course.

“We’ve been sold out every year,” Mayor Norcross said. “We have incredible sponsors and local businesses that come together to help out with this. I always go to the graduations to watch the children graduate. It is very satisfying to see this, and I always receive a ‘thank you’ from every single one of them.”

Local students who receive a bursary are very grateful for the funds, which help them achieve their education goals.
