MOD launches new research tool on-line

If you are a history buff or would just like to know more about local history, the Museum of Dufferin has launched a new interactive research tool that will allow you to explore the region’s past.

The new online tool will allow you to look at the historic villages, schools, churches and cemeteries, businesses, transportation, and industry that shaped the Dufferin County in its early days.

The project was developed by the Museum’s archives department headed by Archivist Laura Camilleri, with help from two interns.

It allows the viewer to work through the map at their own pace so they can spend as much time reading or viewing pictures as they want.

The museum hopes the project will be the inspiration for people who would like to do their own research on property or genealogy.

“I hope you all enjoy learning about the history of Dufferin County through the interactive map,” said archives intern Megan Solomon, who worked on the project. “Through researching the map, I got to explore some of the old hotels in the area and the way that the Scott Act affected them. It has helped to expand my own personal interests as well as allowed me to research a County I am not as familiar with.”

The Scott Act was part of the temperance movement in 1878, and resulted in several local hotels closing.

“Working on the historic landmarks of Dufferin has given me the opportunity to explore my roots,” said Solomon. “I have had a great time with my team designing the map and I hope everyone can see the passion that went into it.”

The research tool will launch on March 4, and can be accessed through the Museum’s website at www.DufferinMuseum.com.
