More vaccines on the way to Simcoe-Muskoka

Officials provided new details on the region’s COVID vaccination program during a media technical briefing on Thursday, March 18.

The program is currently targeting seniors in congregate living, health care workers, adults in First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations, adult chronic home care recipients, and adults over 80 years old.

From April 2021 to July 2021, the target population will be adults aged 60 to 79 in five-year increments, high-risk congregate settings such as shelters and community living, individuals with high-risk chronic conditions and their caregivers, and those considered as at-risk populations.

From July on, the program will target adults 59 years of age and younger.

As of March 18, over 57,000 doses have been administered in the region with over 16,000 people having received the second dose for a full vaccination.

This includes 3,100 long-term care residents who have received at least one dose.

Over 2,900 residents have been fully vaccinated.

Over 3,100 long term care staff have received at least one dose with 2,500 staff fully vaccinated.

Simcoe Muskoka has received 70,915 doses of the vaccine. That includes 61,815 Pfizer, 4,600 Moderna, and 4,500 AZ/COVISHIELD.

A spokesperson during the briefing said Simcoe-Muskoka is expected to receive an additional 36,070 doses of the vaccine by the end of the month.

The provincial government is working with all 34 public health units to plan and implement mass immunization clinics across the province.

There are 255 vaccination sites including hospitals, mass immunization clinics, and mobile clinics that have started or are expected to be running February and March.

Simcoe-Muskoka is using the provincial booking system and provincial call centre to book appointments.

As of March 17, over 30,000 appointments have been booked for Simcoe-Muskoka.
