It was 1986 when Honda Manufacturing first started producing automobiles in Alliston.
The announcement that Honda was going to build an automobile manufacturing plant in town was huge news at the time. It meant jobs as well as secondary businesses that were needed to support a big operation.
Since then, Honda has expanded and employs nearly 5,000 people. Many other businesses have thrived as suppliers and as providers of a transportation network.
The arrival of Honda transformed Alliston from a small town to a thriving and growing centre that continues to benefit from the industry.
York-South Simcoe MP Scot Davidson recognized Honda of Canada Mfg. during a session of Parliament on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
“They say you meet the nicest people in a Honda,” Davidson said. “As the MP for York—South Simcoe, the proud home of Honda Canada, I can tell you the people who build them are every bit as nice too.”
He continued, “Next week, Honda celebrates 40 years of continuous car-making excellence in Canada since its plant first opened in Alliston. Ontario on Nov. 3, 1986. Today, they produce the Honda Civic, the Canadian Car of the Year.
“More than 4,000 Canadians work there, supporting 30,000 more jobs across the sector. From the associates on the line to the suppliers and dealers who put Canadians behind the wheel, every one of them has helped build this legacy. Canadian manufacturing succeeds when we stand behind it. To everyone at Honda, happy 40th. All the best as you keep the power of dreams driving your forward,” Davidson added.
