Mulmur man recognized for forestry education

Forests Ontario held its 9th annual conference in Alliston on Feb. 16 and 17.

The conference was held a the Nottawasaga Resort, with a virtual presence available as well.

This annual event is the largest forestry conference of its kind in the province and featured 37 forest sector leaders and government officials and more than 750 registrants, speakers, moderators, sponsors, and exhibitors.

The conference also included an awards ceremony which recognized important contributors to forestry and the environment.

Mulmur resident Ken Jewett was honoured with the Susan Wiecek Forestry Education Award.

Mr. Jewett started in business with the Abitibi Paper Company in 1950 before leaving to work with Marsan Foods in 1970.

Mr. Jewett’s passion is maple trees. In 2000 he established ‘Maple Leaves Forever.’

Maple Leaves Forever’s mandate is to promote and support the planting of native maple trees.

To date, it has supported the planting of over 130,000 native maples – all through Mr. Jewett’s personal financial contributions of almost $750,000.

Other award winners include:

Dr. Jan Oudenes and Dr. Isobel Ralson – Forest Stewardship Award for outstanding activities in private land forest management and strong support of forestry promotion and education.

Megan Thomson – The White Pine Award for student contributions to forest education and awareness.

Bass Pro Shops & Cabalas – Green Legacy Award celebrates a visionary corporate partner that has been instrumental in promoting a healthy environment.

Cheyene Brunet – Most Valuable Planter Award for an outstanding individual or organization for contributions to restoring ecosystem health through tree planting initiatives.

Art Marvin, Bill Newell, Glenn McLeod, and Laird Nelson – Most Valuable Planter Award recognizes an outstanding individual or organization for their contribution to restoring ecosystem health through tree planting initiatives.

Brian Swaile – The Forests Ontario Award for outstanding achievements and contributions to forestry education in Canada and beyond.
