Illegal dumping continues to be a problem on rural roads in New Tecumseth and surrounding townships.

Town crews routinely find everything from household items to construction materials dropped in ditches in the region.

This may include toxic materials such as oil, paint, or other chemicals. Rural ditches are also used to dispose of smaller items like coffee cups, aluminum cans, and general litter.

There are legitimate options for disposing of old items, garbage, and toxic materials.

You should never toss litter from your car. Local disposal sites are open and will take old materials. They have proper methods of disposing of toxic material such as paint.

They will also dispose of organic materials like garden leftovers and branches.

If you see someone illegally dumping on a local road, the Town asks that you contact the local bylaw department.

Illegal dumping can result in a fine of up to $5,000.
