New Tecumseth council holds final meeting before 2026 election

New Tecumseth council held its final meeting before the 2026 municipal election that will take place on Monday, Oct. 26.

Of the 10 members currently on council, nine are seeking re-election, either in their current position or in a different role. 

The only council member not seeking re-election is Ward 3 Councillor Paul Foster.

A change in the ward boundaries has reduced the number of wards in New Tecumseth from eight to seven for this election.

No candidates running to represent a ward have been acclaimed, as every ward has at least two candidates.

Ward 6 has four candidates.

For the position of mayor, incumbent Richard Norcross is being challenged by current Deputy Mayor Stephanie MacLellan. This means at least one Council member will not be returning after this election.

Current Ward 5 Councillor Marc Biss is not seeking re-election in his Ward but is running for the position of Deputy Mayor.

Biss will be running against Steven Dollmaier for that position.

As New Tecumseh council has entered the ‘lame duck’ phase ahead of the election, the final council meeting did not tackle any serious issues facing the town.

However, there was a discussion about e-bikes, e-scooters, and other electric mobility vehicles, and concerns of both rider safety and the safety of pedestrians on local sidewalks and roadways.

Councillor Biss expressed his thanks to other members of council for their ‘dedication and support over the last four years,’  and thanked town staff for their ‘professionalism and dedication to the Town of New Tecumseth.’

The Times has submitted questions to all candidates regarding their position on town issues and why they should be considered to be elected to the positions.

Candidate answers will be published in upcoming editions of the Times, ahead of the Oct. 26 election.
