With the province announcing intentions for the Town of New Tecumseth to grow, there has been a lot of debate about where growth should, and should not, take place within Tottenham, Alliston and Beeton.

New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross released a statement regarding his position on the province’s plan.

“My rationale has always been simple: if growth is being mandated by the province, New Tecumseth should be the one deciding how that growth is accommodated,” said Mayor Norcross in his statement.

“OPA 5 gives us the opportunity to proactively plan for housing, jobs, infrastructure, and community services rather than reacting to growth after the fact. While Alliston will continue to accommodate the majority of future growth, a balanced approach allows Beeton and Tottenham to share in that growth and the benefits that come with it.”

The statement continued, “Growth is not just about new homes — it is about building the tax base needed to invest in the recreation facilities, parks, roads, programs, and services that our residents expect and deserve.”

“By planning for growth across all three urban areas, we can support complete communities, spread municipal investment more effectively, and ensure New Tecumseth remains a great place to live for generations to come,” the statement concluded.
