After the province ordered municipalities to remove Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, many were disappointed by the loss of revenue and by the cameras’ no longer slowing traffic in school zones or other high-pedestrian areas.
To help with traffic-calming measures, the Town of New Tecumseth will receive $156,892 from Ontario’s Road Safety Initiatives Fund to enhance safety in school and community safety zones without relying on cameras.
The Town of New Tecumseth will implement new traffic-calming measures in the six former ASE locations.
These locations include Queen Street North at Father F.X. O’Reilly School in Tottenham, Adjala Tecumseth Townline at Alliston Community Christian School in Alliston, 10th Sideroad at Tecumseth South Central Public School, Lilly Street East, Monsignor J.E. Ronan Catholic School in Beeton, Patterson Street, Tecumseth Beeton Elementary School, and King Street South, Holy Family Catholic School in Alliston.
Planned improvements include permanent installation of two radar speed signs in each zone, rotating silhouette safety signs, deployed for two weeks at a time, increased police patrols to support speed compliance, and additional high-visibility signage at school and community zone entrances.
“These tools will help slow vehicles, increase awareness, and most importantly, keep our children and families safe,” said New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. “We appreciate the province’s support, which allows us to make effective, permanent road-safety improvements without added cost to drivers or taxpayers.”
As speed cameras are phased out, the Town remains committed to safer school zones through infrastructure upgrades, enforcement partnerships, and ongoing traffic-calming initiatives.
