One person is confirmed dead after a fire on Tottenham Road south of the town on Friday, Feb. 9.

New Tecumseth fire crews responded to a structure fire on the property around 10:05 a.m. The structure was described as a ‘secondary unit’ on a property that had been renovated into a dwelling unit.

“On arrival, crews at a secondary structure on the site, confirmed smoke and an active fire in the structure,” said New Tecumseth Fire Chief Dan Heydon.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a person in the attic space of the building.

“That person was assessed by paramedic services and is declared deceased by paramedics,” Heydon said. “The fire was contained to the building and the room of origin and did not extend beyond that. Extinguishment was fairly quick. We ventilated prior to having paramedics enter the building with us.”

The fire has now turned into a death investigation.

“We’re working with our partners at Nottawasaga OPP. We’ve reached out to the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, and the OFM will be attending the scene,” Heydon said.

The age or gender of the deceased has not been released.

The investigation continues.
