The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police will increase its presence in school zones throughout communities as students return to school.
The OPP is recommending drivers follow these essential safety tips when approaching schools.
Stay focused while driving, devote your full attention to the road, and minimize unnecessary distractions.
Exercise caution in school zones by adhering to the posted speed limits. Given the substantial number of children commuting to school by bus, foot, and bicycle, there will be many young pedestrians around the area around schools.
Be vigilant of school buses – especially those displaying flashing lights. Passing a school bus with activated lights can incur a fine of $490 and six demerit points.
When approaching a crosswalk, follow the direction of traffic signs and signals. If a crossing guard is present, follow their direction and wait until both the students and the crossing guard are completely off of the roadway before proceeding.
For families, familiarize your children with safe routes to school and ensure they are well-acquainted with secure pathways and crosswalks. If your children bike to school, remind them always to wear a helmet and to dismount and walk their bikes across the road.
Encourage everyone, including children, to avoid unnecessary distractions when around vehicles. Instilling an awareness of their surroundings is a vital message that ensures the safe transit of children to and from school.
Throughout the school year, Ontario Provincial Police school resource officers will be accessible to local schools.
If you have inquiries, feedback, or concerns regarding safety within local schools, the OPP encourages you to reach out to them.
