Pitch-in Week allows residents to help beautify the town

Every year when the snow melts it reveals everything that has carelessly been left behind, missed the garbage can, or just tossed out through the window of an automobile.

There is garbage everywhere. From beer cans to coffee cups, our parks and roadways littered with refuse that collects over the winter months.

Pitch-in Week is a national campaign with people across the country taking the time and effort to pick up all the litter. This is the 55th year the initiative has taken place.

While many local roads are already monitored by volunteer groups, there are many areas that do not receive a regular clean-up.

This is a chance for local resident to get involved, get some exercise, and get outdoors to help pick up and dispose of all that litter.

The Town of New Tecumseth is once again participating in the effort.

Crews have already been out on the highways and bi-ways around town but there is still an opportunity to be involved.

The initiative runs through to April 30.

The first thing you have to do is choose a location where you can pick the trash.

You can then contact the town to register and arrange to pick up free supplies, including bags and gloves.

Next, get out there and get the job done. The work will get done quicker if you organize a group of family or friends who want to help out.

Once you have picked up all the trash and place it into the supplied bags, staff from the Town parks and recreation department will come and pick up the bags.

Every year, participants across the country pick up more than five million pounds of litter that would otherwise just be an eyesore in parks and along roadways.
