SMDHU reporting seventh wave of COVID

July 28, 2022   ·   0 Comments

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting that we are now in a seventh wave of COVID-19 that is being driven by the new Omicron subvariant BA. 5.

The BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant strain of the virus in the region and the province.

The SMDHU is reporting a rise in the rate of transmission through increased in local case counts, active outbreaks, hospitalizations, and waste water signals in some communities.

The BA.5 subvariant spreads even faster between people than the last strain of COVID-19 and has similar severity.

It can reinfect those who have previously had COVID-19.

The increase in the spread of the virus through the community means you should consider your personal risk and take precautions when out in public.

The SMDHU recommends wearing a mask in all indoor public places, and is stressing the importance of staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations including booster doses.

You should also practice all other personal protective health behaviours such as limiting the number of close contacts, maintaining physical distance, socializing outdoors when possible, and staying home when ill.

If you develop symptoms, you should get tested.
