Smile Cookies deliver sweet bonus to Beeton arena campaign

Those tasty cookies that were available for $1 at Tim Horton’s recently helped to top up the funds that will go toward building a new multi-purpose community centre in Beeton.

FAB, a local group of community leaders, are dedicated to raising $500,000 towards building the new community centre and replacing the old, now dated Beeton arena.

They have managed to raise around $300,000 so far.

The Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie initiative sells the baked treats with proceeds going towards local causes.

Tim Horton’s announced that a record $10.56 million was raised through the national campaign.

Local Tim Horton’s franchisees are offered the opportunity to direct funds raised to a local cause of their choosing.

Beeton store owner David MacRae donated 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of Smile Cookies to FAB.

MacRae, himself a former Junior A level hockey player, said he thinks a new arena would be an important addition to the town.

“We are given a lot of latitude when selecting a local cause to donate Smile Cookie funds to,” Mr. MacRae said. “Hockey is a great sport and it’s a big part of the town. We thought donating the Smile Cookie money would help them increase the funds while increasing awareness about the proposed new community centre.”

Ray Lisk, chair of FAB, has been leading the effort to bring a new arena and community centre to Beeton for the past several years.

“We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of the residents in and around Beeton as they rallied for our cause,” Mr. Lisk said. “It is very encouraging.”

There is already a plan in place for the new facility. An artist’s rendering is available for the public on Main Street in Beeton just down the street from the public library.

It also features a thermometer that keeps tabs on how much money has been raised for the project.

The new multi-purpose facility will have an ice pad, community hall with a kitchen, meeting room, fitness and wellness centre, walking track, and a large lobby and greeting area.

Plans call for demolishing the current area and building the new facility on the existing site.

The success of this year’s Smile Cookie campaign means Tim Horton’s restaurant owners across the country will be presenting their local charity partners with Smile Cookie cheques over the next few months.
