Spud Fest cancelled again this summer

It probably won’t come as much of a surprise, but the Alliston Potato Festival has been cancelled again this summer.

This is the second year in a row the popular festival has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Last year would have been the 47th year the parade and festival would have taken place, making this summer number 48, but organizers have decided there is just too much risk involved with trying to have the festival during such uncertain times.

The festival always happens in early August and starts with the Festival parade that marches down Victoria Street on Friday evening where thousands of people find a place along the route and wave to everyone on the parade floats.

It’s not uncommon to hear someone in the crowd calling out to someone on the parade by name.

The party continues after the parade with street performances and other activities.

On Saturday, Victoria Street is closed to traffic an there is a full day of activities and performances on the streets as well as vendors and a car show. The fairgrounds come alive with a midway and rides as well as more demonstrations and a lot of good food.

The party goes on into the night.

There is also a demolition derby, which is very popular.

Sunday begins with the annual baby contest. The three-day festival ends with closing ceremonies and a concert at Riverdale Park.

The Potato Festival is just one in a long list of big festivals that have been cancelled already this year.

The Tottenham Bluegrass Festival is also experiencing its second year with an empty stage.

The annual Home and Leisure show hosted by the Alliston and District Chamber of Commerce has also been cancelled.

It’s a sad situation as the Potato Festival provide a lot of fun and many lasting memories for those who attend. However, organizers are already planning for a return of the festival in 2022.
