STA Stingers take win over St. Peter’s

The St. Thomas Aquinas Stingers football team hosted the St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School Panthers on the gridiron at STA on Oct. 6. The Stingers took an early lead in the first quarter and managed to leave the field with a 22-14 win.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Stingers took an early lead in their Oct. 6 game against the St. Peter’s Panthers and managed to hold on for the full four quarters to win.
STA’s Cole Verlinde opened the scoring in the first quarter when he ran wide to the left and sprinted across the goal line to give the Stingers a 6-0 lead.
The Stingers defence held tight mid-way in the quarter when the Panthers found themselves in scoring position deep in the St. Thomas end.
After getting a first down at the Stingers 20, a fumble recovered by STA gave the squad the ball deep in their own end.
The Panthers got into the game in the second quarter when a they made good on a pass into the end zone to tie the game them moved ahead by one on a successful convert kick.
Back on offence, the Stingers had good gains including a solid first-down run by Talon Horst.
With only a couple of minutes left in the half the Stingers tied the game with a single point rouge.
A Stingers player ended the half with an interception on a pass.
Going into the second half, the STA squad took control of the game with a pair of touchdowns from Chris Thorn and Cole Verlinde – his second of the game.
With two successful kicks for a point each, the Stingers were leading 21-14 going into the fourth quarter.
St. Peter’s managed to close that gap late in the game with a TD to trail by seven points.
Another single point late in the game gave the Singers a 22-14 win for their second game on the plus side this season.
The Stingers will return to their home field on Friday, Oct. 8, when they will host St. Theresa’s Catholic High School from Midland.
